How to scare the living crap out of people-- Part 1

Alright, so this is a heated subject at both of the attractions I work at right now so I'm posting my views on it. At Revenge of the Mummy, we have the opportunity to be Minions of Imhotep and scare the living crap out of people offering to send them to Imhotep as sacrifices. At Tower of Terror, we have the opportunity to put people on 'Normal' Service Elevators that then fall and rise faster than gravity all while having and expressing the "I know something you don't know" attitude.

Section 1: The types of scares.

The "Boo" Scare (or that of the funhouse variety).

Alone, this scare sucks. It startles someone and then after that they have a good laugh at their own experience. If the person receives enough "Boo" scares in the same amount of time, an immunity will develop. This sucks as well.

The Pyscho Scare.

This scare alone sucks as well. This can be as simple as asking someone "Do you like bugs" in a creepy voice while holding a clenched fist (as if you have a bug in your hand). In all reality, there are no bugs-- but the guest is tricked into believing there are. It's also adding suspense by saying something like "There's nothing to be afraid of. Nothing....At.....All. The problem with this scare is that a lot of people will develop a defensive barrier and that they actually think about what you do thus taking their imagination out of the game.

The Combo.

This is the best type of scare. Take this example. You sneak up right behind a mother of two in line. The kids point for her to look behind. She looks and screams (the "Boo" scare). At the same time as she turned around, you also hold out a clenched fist and ask in a creepy voice "Do you like bugs?" (The Pyscho Scare). This does a couple things. By immeadietly asking if she likes bugs, you stopped her from laughing at the "Boo" scare and from her thinking about the fact you have nothing in your hands. In addition because you scared the mother, the kids will probably either laugh at the mother's expense to be terrified as well.

The Combo creates vivid memories for guests and the Cast Member/Team Member. Instead of scaring them, you've evoked fear into them.

Afraid
Filled with fear. Having feelings of aversion or unwillingness in regard to something. Filled with regret or concern.

Scared
A sudden fright or alarm, esp. with little or no reason.

I prefer to make people afraid of something instead of scared of something.
